The iKhulu Trail Run
Wed 23 Oct - Sun 27 Oct 2019 @ Nomvunya, KwaZulu-Natal

Join us on the unspoilt coastline of Maputaland for a running experience like no other. Where the Indian Ocean meets pristine beaches and rolling sand dunes, we take you on an adventure as you race the tide and meander through coastal forests and local communities.

With only 26 runners, you’ll practically have the wilderness to yourselves.

The location is beautiful and will offer breathtaking views and a remoteness that is rarely found anymore. The iKhulu Trail Run is open to all abilities; racing snakes can race the tide, equally you can take your time on the course and enjoy the stunning views (there are no cut offs).

Day 1: Transport to Maputaland and King and Queen of the Mountain

We travel to our venue and kick off the experience with a 1.5km King and Queen of the Mountain time trial followed by sundowners.

Day 2: Rock and Roll

Distance: ±30km

Start by heading down to the pristine beaches of Maputaland and then head north to Rocktail Bay and Black Rock whose shallow waters boast some of the most beautiful and diverse marine life South Africa has to offer. Running off the beach, you will then wind your way back to camp through the coastal forests and grasslands over beautiful rolling dunes.

Day 3: Race the Tide

Distance: ±45k

The longest and most challenging day, the route first makes its way down to the ocean where today you run south along the endless beach before swinging inland and making your way to Lake Sibaya, South Africa’s largest fresh water lake. Look out for hippos! From the lake, you’ll make meander back to camp on a combination of jeep track, cattle track and beach. A good amount of beach running means you’ll be racing the tide today but you might be lucky enough to spot a whale or dolphins!

Day 4: Nuts

Distance: ±25km

Today you’ll run inland first, stretching your legs while passing through local communities and the native Nguni cattle. Running through grassland, fern bush and pine forests, you’ll make your way to the coast and finish heading south along the beach before a short run through the coastal forest back to camp.

Day 5: Heading Home

After an early breakfast we make our way back to the bus for the trip home.
