The first grapes were pressed for wine at the Cape on 2 February 1659. The French Huguenot Jean Manje took ownership of the Calais farm in 1692, making Calais one of the oldest farms in the Paarl area.
It was during these early years that Paarl established itself as one of the leading wine producing areas of South Africa. The soil, climate and setting are ideally suited for the making of excellent wine.
In 2006 Calais farm has bought Kleinvallei Winery, a privately owned boutique winery in Daljosafat, Paarl, which is in the heart of the South African wine lands. It is the first boutique winery to be established in the Daljosafat valley and specialises in production of Bordeaux style red wines from two farms: Calais farm and Kleinvallei farm.
