The ancient and majestic Magaliesberg Mountains – 100 times older than Mount Everest and the mountain jewel of South Africa’s north! Once known as the Kashan Mountains and designated a Unesco World Biosphere Reserve in 2015,this spectacular range of quartzite cliffs, dolomite outcrops, crystal clear mountain springs and canyon-sized kloofs serves as a dramatic eternal geological barrier between the Highveld grasslands to the south and bushveld savannah in the north.
Long a favourite with hikers, kloofers and climbers, the more remote and rugged northwestern mountains have largely been officially off-limits to trailrunners – until now! Conservation-leaders Mountain Sanctuary Park, and Mountain Club of South Africa, who administer the adjacent Tonquani Complex (incorporating the legendary Cedarberg and Tonquani Gorges), have recognized the love, passion and respect that trailrunners have for the environment. As a result they have agreed to open their mountain trails to a very limited group of trailrunners for one weekend a year, inviting them to test themselves against the toughest and most spectacular mountain environment that upcountry South Africa has to offer.
And so the Kashan Quest was born!

KQ50
Exclusively single-track, foot-path or mountain-running.
Technical in places; lots of steep climbing and descent; boulder hopping and rock jumping; river crossings; great balance between some steep climbs, scrambling, technical trail and some fast running sections.
The KQ50 requires a certain level of fitness and trail-running experience, and is not for those scared of heights, dirt or sweat. Best suited to trail runners with some level of technical and distance experience, or strong roadies who are fairly fit. The trails are professionally designed to inspire and challenge, encapsulating all of the features that make true trailrunning so uniquely rewarding, and to show off the splendour of the Magaliesberg.
Approximately 25km/day.
KQ30
Exclusively single-track, foot-path or mountain-running.
Moderately technical; some climbing / descent; boulders & rivers; lots of good running; panoramic views and spectacular scenery.
The KQ30 is NOT an entry level fun run! It is however well-suited to most levels of runners and is perfect for the up and coming trailrunner who is ready for the real deal, as well as for roadies who are ready to escape the tarmac. The KQ30 is the ideal introduction to stage racing. Finshers will go home having properly lived the magic that is the Magaliesberg.
Approximately 15km/day.
