Wild Restoration
As part of the Greyton ReWild Weekend on 7-9 October, on the Friday evening (7 October), you can explore the trails around Greyton by moonlight. There will be a 6km and 12km full moon trail run. The race is organised by the non-profit, Wild Restoration, in partnership with the Greyton Trail Running Society, the people who have brought you Greyton Brew Run and Mountain Marathon.
All the proceeds go to alien clearing and rewilding the mountains around Greyton. A headtorch is required for the 12km and recommended for the 6km (a torch on a phone will work too).
Distances and routes
- 12km Trail Run – for the more experienced trail runner, with two big hills and total climbing of 400m.
- 6km Trail Run (or walk) – a flat, easy route suitable for walkers, families and children. 100m total climbing.
The 12km full moon run
The 12km involves some proper hills with total climbing of 400m. After a short distance to separate the field, there will be a nice 150m climb up to the first of the two main hills. Here you will look down onto the village below, basked in moonlight. A gentle descent down will take you into the Greyton’s main gorge and to your first river crossing followed by your the second mail hill. You will then descend ‘zig-zag’, which is quite technical to the river below. You will then run through the restored fynbos areas before the second river crossing and fast flat 2km finish. The Waterpoint midway along the course will be offer some welcome refreshments in wild setting.
The 6km full moon run
The 6km is a flat, easy route suitable for walkers, families and children, with a total of 100m of climbing. The route takes you alongside the banks of the Gobos River where you will be able to follow the moon’s reflection. It is combination of single track and jeep track and includes one small climb to add some interest and allow for a view of the river below lit up by the moon. It will take you through areas that have been restored to indigenous fynbos which were full of black wattle up until they were recently cleared, giving you a sense of what rewilding can achieve. The Waterpoint midway along the course will be offer some welcome refreshments in wild setting.
