The Big Bay Mile !

Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club has a home grown and proud history of surf lifesaving having been long been ranked as one of the best Surf Lifesaving Clubs in South Africa! The club proudly serves the local Blouberg community through their volunteer based Lifeguard programme during the Lifesaving Season (November to April) as well as having a very active Nipper programme with over 100 children, aged between 5 and 14 years old, learning the basics of lifesaving, sea skills and beach safety, every week throughout the summer.

All Lifesavers registered for the 2023/2024 season with a South African Lifesaving Club will be able to take advantage of a reduced entry fee when entering The Big Bay Mile in recognition of their ongoing voluntary service to both their local communities and respective Lifesaving Clubs.

NOTE: Swimmers Under 14 may enter ONLY IF they have a Lifesaving South Africa Level 3 Nipper (Under 13 and Under 14) Award.

The swim itself will follow the swim route starting from Scissors Rock, swimming around Calmers Rock and back. Swimmers will walk down the beach from Big Bay Surf Lifesaving club at 08:45 to the start of the race at Scissors from 09:00. Swimmers are encouraged to bring along a warm top and/or blanket on the day that can be used on the way to the start and thereafter donated at the drop off point at Big Bay Lifesaving Club. All clothing and blankets collected at the The Big Bay Mile will be donated to local charities in the surrounding communities.

On the day of The Big Bay Mile there will be separate recognition for the Top 3 Open Male and Female swimmers in both the Skins and Wetsuit categories as well as the top 3 Juniors (Under 18s). There will also be special recognition for the First Male and Female Registered Lifesavers as well for the Top Lifesaving Club based on their Top 3 swimmer results. Big Bay Surf Lifesaving Club looks forward to welcoming swimmers and re-establishing the swim as the biggest swim on the Atlantic Seaside.

With special thanks to The Big Bay Mile sponsors.
