Start your year with a little magic with a special outdoor experience at Muratie Wine Estate. Dirtopia’s first Sunset to Full Moon Hike of 2026 invites you to enjoy a peaceful picnic at the lookout point as the sun sets and the full moon climbs into the sky. It’s the perfect way to celebrate new beginnings in nature.

Bring along a picnic and enjoy breathtaking views with a glass of Muratie’s award-winning wine at the top. After sunset, continue the adventure as the trail winds back through the forest, illuminated by your headlamp under the full moon.

The circular route takes hikers on a marked route of 3.5km in total and with over 200 hand-built steps. It takes 30 to 45 minutes to the look-out going up, depending on your pace of course. Plan your arrival anytime from 5.45pm at the Trail Centre, but no later than 6.45pm.

The marked hiking trail leads to a lookout point, where you can marvel at views of Simonsberg, the Winelands, and even Table Mountain. Here, you can buy four Muratie wines from the MCC, Dry Rose, Sauvignon Blanc or the Melck’s Dry Red blend.

After sunset & moonrise (by 20h00), it only takes about 20 to 30 minutes back to Dirtopia Trail Centre.

What to Bring:

• A backpack with your own food/picnic and blanket for the lookout point.
• Jacket/sweater for after dark.
• A torch or headlamp.
• Good walking or hiking shoes for varied terrain.

What to Expect:

• Muratie wines by the glass or bottle is available at the look-out.
• Snacks like chips & energy bars and cooldrinks are on sale at the Trail Centre, where you’ll also collect your permit on arrival. Coffee will be sold at this shop as well.

Schedule:

• Arrival: From 17:45 (latest start: 18:45).
• Latest descent from the lookout: 20:15.
• Return to Trail Centre: 20:30–21:30, depending on your pace.
