Postberg - Steenbok Hiking Trail

Come join us on this beautiful one day 11km walk through Postberg Nature Reserve in Langebaan.

Once a year from the beginning of August until the end of September Postberg is open to the public. This restricted section inside the West Coast National Park is privately owned.

Postberg is most famous for its spectacular displays of wild flowers in the flower season, it also has a higher concentration of animal species like bontebok, kudu, eland, zebra, bateared foxes and many beautiful birds, including the endangered black harrier. 

To drive through Postberg is special, but to hike it is really something else. This very popular trail is limited to 20 hikers per day. 

We will walk at a slow and unrushed pace, with plenty opportunities to stop and take photos and to absorb the beauty of our surroundings. We will end the hike at Plankiesbaai, which is approximately 11km from the start, it cuts out the last 5km of the hike which has a number of hills and a fairly long section of soft beach sand. 

This will give us enough time to drive up to the Uitkyk "viewpoint" which overlooks the Langebaan lagoon. There is a food truck located at the viewpoint selling cooldrinks, coffee and some South African favourites!

Time: Arrive at Postberg Gate at 08h45 to start around 09h15

Distance: 11km

Duration: 5-6 hours

Cost: R750 per person 

Difficulty: Moderate

Grade: A Grade (foot path and some jeep track)

Elevation: 162m above sea level

The price includes:

• Transport to and from the start of the hike (Postberg gate) from Langebaan (if required)
• Steenbok Trail Permit Fee

The price excludes:

• SANParks West Coast National Park gate entry fee (see Table below for pricing). 
• The entrance fee is payable at the gate upon arrival. Please ensure you bring proof of identification for South African citizens and SADC Nationals and your WildCard if you have one.

West Coast National Park Entry Fee:

• South Africans: R121
• SADC Nationals: R192
• International: R306
• Wildcard Holder: Free

What to bring:

• Good comfortable walking shoes, trail runners or hiking boots
• Sun protection e.g. hat and sunblock
• Dress in layers, bring along a warm top and rain jacket in case (the West Coast weather can be fairly unpredictable)
• Water: 2 litres per person (there is no water on the trail, only at Plankiesbaai (10km) and Tsaarsbank (16km)
• Trail snacks and/or lunch
• Camera or phone to take photos
• Any medication you may need while walking if you have a medical condition e.g. asthma pump, insulin 

Other Important Information:

The Steenbok Trail is situated within a national park and are therefore subject to the National Parks Act. The most applicable regulations are:

• No pets allowed
• No picking of flowers
• No removal of any material, plant or animal
• Do not litter
• No fires on the beach
• Please do not pick up tortoises
• Speed limit 50km/h
• Please remain in your vehicle, for your own safety
