TOUR ITINERARY

Day 1: Arrival at Natures Valley, 1st night at your choice of accommodation in Natures Valley at your cost:

6pm: Meet at Nature’s Valley at a Restaurant (TBC) to enjoy dinner together (own expense)

Day 2: From Ocean to Escarpment (18 km – 8,5 hours)

Your journey begins along the serene Groot River lagoon, accompanied by the sounds of the Indian Ocean and a chorus of coastal birdlife. After a steady climb up the escarpment, the landscape transforms into a high-altitude plateau rich in fynbos. The day concludes deep in the Afromontane forest at Bloukrans Hut, perched dramatically on a cliff edge.

  • Highlight: Sip sundowners on the balcony overlooking the gorge or hike down to the “Coca-Cola” colored waterfall for a dip in private rock pools. Keep an eye out for the resident Large-spotted Genets!

Day 2: Into the Enchanted Wild (14 km – 8 hours)

Today is about isolation and immersion. You’ll enter the eerie, mist-shrouded Buffelsbos—a patch of forest steeped in history—before heading east into the mountains. The trail offers a thrilling crossing of the Bloukrans River at Waterwitelsgat, an ideal spot for a midday swim.

  • Highlight: Before reaching the Keurbos Hut, relax in the “Twin Tubs,” natural rock pools that feel like wild jacuzzis. Listen for the hauntingly beautiful call of the Narina Trogon in the surrounding Alder trees.

Day 3: Rivers and Remote Peaks (14 km – 7,5 hours)

Day three is defined by majestic river crossings, and ancient mountain vistas. You will conquer Rushes Pass, where frequent pauses to admire the view are highly recommended. The trail then descends into the remote Elandsbos River valley, winding through the “hidden secrets” of the Heuningbos indigenous forest.

  • Highlight: After crossing the Kleinbos River twice, you’ll reach Heuningbos Hut, which features a magnificent swimming pool just a short walk away.

Day 4: The Fynbos Odyssey (14.5 km – 8 hours)

This stretch of the trail takes you across two mountain saddles through pristine fynbos. You’ll traverse Splendid Pass, named for the rare and beautiful Mimetes splendidus flower, before finding shade in the wet indigenous forest of Mostertsbos.

  • Highlight: The view from Nademaalsnek is your reward for the day’s effort, offering a panoramic look at the Storms River Gorge and your final overnight stop, Sleepkloof Hut, nestled on a forested slope.

Day 5: The Final Descent (2.5 km – 1 hour)

A gentle, celebratory finish. The final 2.5 km is an easy descent through forest pioneers and fynbos toward the iconic Paul Sauer Bridge (Storms River Bridge).

  • Conclusion: Transfer back to Nature’s Valley as you bid farewell to the mountains.
