⛰️ SEWEWEEKSPOORT PEAK SUMMIT

THE ULTRA MOUNTAIN

2 325 m | Northern Approach | Car-to-Car Summit Push

Seweweekspoort Peak is not simply another mountain hike.

At 2 325 metres, it is regarded as one of South Africa’s ULTRA mountains — a formidable high-altitude challenge demanding strength, endurance, determination and respect for the mountain.

For this adventure, we will take on the northern approach, completing a car-to-car summit push in a single day.

🥾 THE CHALLENGE

Distance: 9.84 km out & back
Elevation Gain: 1 215 m
Highest Point: 2 325 m
Format: Car-to-car | Single-day summit push

The northern route is relentlessly steep, with very little opportunity to settle into an easy rhythm. The elevation gain comes quickly, and the exposed terrain demands constant effort.

But the real challenge is not simply getting to the top.

It is dealing with everything the mountain can throw at you along the way.

🌬️ THE ULTRA-MOUNTAIN ENVIRONMENT

As you climb higher, you enter a true alpine environment where conditions can change dramatically and with very little warning.

Approaching from the drier, more exposed northern side means you are particularly vulnerable to the elements.

💨 Gale-force winds
The summit is highly exposed and can experience violent, buffeting winds — even when conditions in the valley below appear completely calm.

🥶 Rapid temperature changes
Temperatures at altitude can be dramatically lower than at the starting point. As a general mountain rule of thumb, temperatures can fall by approximately 1°C per 100 m of ascent, meaning the summit may be 10–15°C colder than where we start, with wind chill making it feel considerably colder.

❄️ Sudden freezing conditions
Cold fronts can move in quickly. Mist, rain, sleet and even snow are possible at altitude, including during seasons when conditions in the valley are relatively mild.

☀️ Exposure & heat
The northern slope is highly exposed, with little or no natural shade. Strong solar radiation can make the ascent hot and physically demanding — only for conditions to change dramatically once you reach the exposed upper mountain.

🎒 GEAR IS NOT OPTIONAL

This is an exposed high-altitude mountain adventure, and participants need to come properly equipped.

ESSENTIAL CLOTHING & GEAR:

🧥 Windproof & waterproof shell
A quality waterproof/windproof jacket is essential. Conditions at the summit can be completely different from those at the start.

🧣 Warm insulating layer
Bring a fleece or lightweight down jacket, regardless of how warm it feels when we start.

🧢 Beanie & gloves
Cold, wind and exposure can become significant at altitude.

☀️ Sun protection
Wide-brimmed hat/cap, high-factor sunscreen and sunglasses are essential on the exposed northern slopes.

🥾 Proper hiking footwear
Sturdy footwear with good grip is essential for the steep and rocky terrain.

💧 Adequate hydration & nutrition
There is significant elevation gain over a relatively short distance. Carry sufficient water and high-energy food for the entire outing.

🔦 Emergency essentials
A headlamp, emergency blanket and appropriate personal emergency kit are strongly recommended. Mountain conditions and delays are unpredictable.

⚠️ THIS IS NOT A BEGINNER'S HIKE

The distance may look modest on paper — 9.84 km — but the 1 215 m elevation gain tells the real story.

This is a demanding mountain ascent involving steep climbing, significant exposure and potentially extreme weather conditions.

You need to be comfortable with sustained steep ascent, exposed mountain terrain and a long, physically demanding day on the mountain.

The mountain sets the pace.

We respect it.

We prepare for it.

And then we earn the summit.
