Join us for a 5km sunset walk or run in the heart of the Durbanville winelands and support DF Malan student Wynandt Vermaak. The Vermaak family's home was destroyed by a house fire in July 2017. The fire started in the roof above Wynandt's room. Wynandt sustained 60% 3rd degree burn wounds to his body. He was in an induced coma for two weeks in the Tygerberg Hospital and received his first set of skin transplants on day 15. He was then transferred to the Melomed Bellville hospital where he received his second set of skin transplants. The medical costs for the recovery process is very high as burn wounds treatments are very intense and a much slower process. Wynandt receive weekly physiotherapy treatments to keep his skin and muscles supple and elastisized to prevent the disability of movement. He needs to be massaged 3-4 times per day to ensure proper blood flow to the burns and skin transplants. This process will be ongoing for the next two years. Currently his skin is forming keloids (overproduction of collagen) which makes the healing process more intense and the costs much higher due to the need of buying more silicone.
Wynandt is a very energetic, outdoor loving teenager of 14 years old. For now much of his recovery needs to be indoors.
