FUNKY fynbos festival DUO
Are you a hardcore Mountain Biker and Trail Runner?
Then you can be our next Ysterman or Ystervrou!
This is the perfect opportunity to explore the magnificent Walkerbay Fynbos Conservancy Trails on your bike and per foot.
Start off by being part of the MTB race on the Saturday and on the Sunday you will be part of the Trail Running races.
The Long Combo is really only for hardcore athletes, as both the MTB and Trail Run routes are only for experienced and fit athletes.
You will challenge your body to the max, but it will be worth it!!
Cash prizes up for grabs for the Long Combo athletes.
LONG DUO:
Saturday 22 Sept: 50km MTB - Start at 08:00
Sunday 23 Sept: 30km Trail Run - Start at 07:45
MEDIUM DUO:
Saturday 22 Sept: 24km MTB - Start at 08:30 (This is part of the lap race, so you will do 3 laps)
Sunday 23 Sept: 12km Trail Run - Start at 08:30
Entry Fee includes a Bottle of Lomond Wine as well as a KAUAI meal for the Long DUO finishers!
Timing done by Live Time (Entryninja), so please bring your SAS timing chip with. Otherwise you can rent one for R10 or buy one for R50.
Registration:
Friday 21 Sept 15:00 - 19:00 at the Gansbaai Harbour (there will be a tent with other festivities as well).
Or Saturday 22 Sept 06:30 - 08:00 at the venue.
Venue and start and finish is at Lomond Wine Estate, just outside Gansbaai.
This forms part of the Funky Fynbos Festival, with a lot of activities happening over the weekend.
If you don't want to MTB AND Run, then you also have the option of 2 days MTB or 1 day MTB or Trail Run.

The Funky Monster MTB, 50km of tough ascents and fast descents with a fun finish. Great scenic rewards in pristine fynbos and a great opportunity to ride/ race these trails which finishes with a 2km fun gravity finish including jumps and berms to rest your legs into the finish (chicken runs available). Times to be beat and course bests to be set, book now. Requires a good level of fitness and technical skill levels.
The FUNKY MTB Lap Races, 8, 16, 24 km raced on an 8km loop with fun obstacles and challenging climbs rewarded with a fun gravity driven finish. Choose your distance and go for it. Relatively easy 8km loop, requiring time in the seat the more laps you do. Just remember this is the Gansbaai routes and it is not without challenging climbs…rewarded with fun down hills
Fynbos 30km Trail Run
This is a toughie with three steep climbs and a total altitude gain of 1229m. The runs starts and ends at Lomond Wine Estate. The first water table at the 6km mark under the shade of ancient white pear and wild olive trees. The trail meanders through magnificent fynbos to the Grootbos Milkwood Forest where runners will follow the forest trail path under these majestic, thousand year old trees. The route then takes runners down through pristine fynbos in full spring time bloom and through the ancient and milkwood forest to the second water point at Fynbos Retreat at the 21km mark. From here it’s down into beautiful forest and a surprise waterfall and then up the second major climb and then descends quite steeply into Flower valley through the beautiful Stinkhoutsbos Forest and down the valley to the finish line at Lomond Wine Estate.
Running time: Top runners can expect to take around 140-160mins to complete the 30km route and back markers about 4.5 hours.
Funky twelve ‘k’
This run is suitable for the novice-intermediate trail runners. The routes are by no means flat but it’s on farm roads, jeep tracks and a well-used hiking trail. The first three kilometres provides a relatively easy, gentle warm up along the lower slopes of Flower Valley, before a steep climb up the fynbos-clad slopes. At the top you will experience spectacular 360 degree views across the Agulhas Plain towards the distant Cape Agulhas at the southern tip of Africa, as well as beautiful views of Dyer Island and the South Atlantic Ocean. From the highest point at the 7km mark the trail winds down a jeep track to the Stinkwood forest where runners will be treated to the shade of ancient indigenous trees and run along the stream before exiting the forest for the final charge down the valley to the finish at the Funky Festival grounds at Lomond Wine Estate.
Running time: Top runners can expect to take about 40-45 minutes, while back markers will take about 2 hours.
